Poetry : Sun 13 Aug

Relaxing in the bar at the Pleasance Dome last night with a glass of cider, I watched an older couple talk animatedly while enjoying their drinks.

Brows furrowed under silver hair
Rebound insightful views beamed through
Steel-rimmed glasses.
Familiarity's fresh perfume
Colours the space of understanding
Between them.
Fresh, not stale.
Familiarity here having bred
Neither contempt
Nor tedious silence,
But interchange, intercourse,
Interaction ... understanding ... and love.

I took another sip and enjoyed the feeling of the sharp, almost petulant tanginess of fruit envelop my tongue, inspiring a diamante poem

CIDER
Effervescent, Light.
Whispering, Fizzing, Seducing
Glass, Hand, Tongue, Throat,
Sensing, Tasting, Devouring -
Satisfaction. Refreshment.
Repose.

'Ma Cherie Amour' was playing through the speakers, and a couple on a sofa were obviously getting into the song, inspired to play out a tactile dance in time to the stretched out line of melody

Her hand explores the textures of his close-cropped hair.
Remembering her childhood explorations of cats’ fur
And the roughness of cats’ tongues and
The inexplicable softness of their paws as her hands
Now seek a taste of creamy smoothness in the
Living landscape of his neck, the softness of his ear,
The harder contour of his cheek,
And as he melts, I’m tempted to say
Enjoy it now – but watch out for those claws!

The evening mellows, the cider in the glass diminishes, and I wonder what it would be like if I were cider ...

Iced coolness cubed plays with fronds of liquid hair.
I fit snugly into the prescribed shape of the glass.
Relishing the smooth, cool feel
Of its solidified liquidity
Against the edges of my being,
I have no need to breathe.
My skin tingles.
Bubbles tickle my toes,
Tummy button, armpits,
Nose and erogenous zones.
In my liquidity,
I feel refreshed,
appreciated,
Drunk.

And so to bed – and the next morning, the team at the Pleasance Dome Box Office help judge yesterday's competition on the topic of 'Madeleines'. They decided this entry was the winner.

They are little
umm
Brioche
umm
type things with
um
sponge cake things
ummm
With a space like this I’ll draw you a picture
yummm.
They are kind of
umm
not marzipan, almond, ...
vanillaey.
You can get lemon ones,
but they have the taste
of sponge cake
type sponge.
