Festival Vacancies
Each year, with the invaluable help of some 200 enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, we stage one of the largest operations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with 2 sites, 20 venues and over 200 shows taking place on any given day.

Volunteers
We are currently looking for assertive and confident volunteers to work as ushers in our Front of House department. Whether you can commit to one evening a week or one evening a month, we want to hear from you! Please send a letter of interest explaining why you want to get involved and what you could bring to our team to jobs@pleasance.co.uk with Pleasance Volunteer in the subject line.
Work Experience
We are happy to offer young people the opportunity to experience life in a working theatre, although, as some times of the year are more suitable than others, availability can be limited.
Please also note we can only take on placements that are one to two weeks. Work experience can be considered for years 14+

Marketing
Internship One – London Venue Marketing
Please note: Internship One is now filled for 2013
The first internship will run from February 2012 until May 2012, with the option to extend should they show an interest in becoming involved in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The successful candidate will have an active interest in performing arts and Arts Marketing and will be available at least 3 days per week.
This exciting unpaid position will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work within a busy festival organisation and gain hands on marketing experience in a vibrant theatre and comedy venue.
Duties include:
- Maintaining and updating content on the Pleasance website
- Copywriting and producing weekly email-bulletins and monthly e-newsletters
- Writing and distributing press releases and show listings to the media
- Managing, maintaining and updating Pleasance social networking sites including Facebook
- Designing posters and other marketing collateral
- Assisting with mailings and print distribution
- Planning promotions and street team schedules
- Maintaining venue posters and front of house displays
- General administration
Personal specification:
- Enthusiastic lover of comedy and theatre
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Excellent attention to detail and organisation skills
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work independently and with initiative
- Ability to work to tight deadlines
- Experience of the Adobe Design Suite including In Design and Photoshop, or the willingness to learn.
Internship Two – Edinburgh Festival Fringe Marketing (based in London)
Internship Two is now filled for 2013
The second internship will run from March 2012 until June 2012, with the option to extend and come to Edinburgh in August. The successful candidate will be proactive, have an active interest in performing arts and Arts Marketing and will be available at least 3 days per week.
This exciting unpaid position will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to gain hands on Marketing Experience and work within a busy festival organisation in the hectic lead up to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Duties include:
- Manage Fringe submissions compiling and submitting content for the Festival Fringe brochure and ECF brochure
- Assist in the management and distribution of invoices and reconcile payments
- Act as liaison between Pleasance, performing companies and the Festival Fringe Society.
- Participate in intensive proofing of Festival marketing collateral
- Maintaining and updating content on the Pleasance website
- Designing posters and other marketing collateral
- Assisting with mailings and print distribution
- General administration
Personal specification:
- Enthusiastic lover of comedy and theatre
- Excellent attention to detail and organisation skills
- Be proactive, use initiative and have the ability to work autonomously and manage a heavy work load
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Computer literate, with the ability to learn new systems quickly
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrate confidence and self assurance when communicating with companies
- Ability to work to very tight deadlines
- Experience of the Adobe Design Suite, including In Design and Photoshop or the willingness to learn.

Programming

This post will run from February, initially for a 3 month period with the option to extend should you show an interest in becoming involved in the lead up to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The programming team are responsible for putting together the programme for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe including some 230 shows. Each year we receive hundreds of applications from companies hoping to be included within our programme and it is the job of the programming intern to log these applications and to be the first point of contact for related enquiries and submissions.
A programming intern will not only work directly within the programming team, but will crossover with other departments including marketing and press, as required.
The successful candidate will have an active interest in performing arts and in theatre, particularly. This exciting unpaid position will allow you to gain valuable experience in what is involved in the programming process for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Applicants should be over 18 and interested in a career in the arts. Candidates will be required to work a minimum of 3-4 days per week.
Our interns get experience doing the following:
- Logging and processing all applications for 2012
- Notifying companies that their application has been received and is being processed by the programming team
- Liaising with artists and companies regarding general enquiries relating to either Edinburgh or the application process
- Reading scripts and publicity material
- Filing applications
- Notifying companies should their application be unsuccessful
- Producing feedback for the programmers on request
- Proof reading brochures, show entries and adverts
- Maintaining various Google documents regarding show information and
company contact information - General administration relating to the programming department

Administration

Pleasance Theatre Trust is looking for administrative interns to start with us from February or June 2013. The ideal candidates should be able to commit to a 3 months placement and expect to work around 3 days per week.
Ideal for individuals seeking an insight into arts-admin, both placements will provide a broad range of support to the Managers and team during our busiest times of year. The June placement will involve a month in Edinburgh for the Festival Fringe. The option of joining the team in Edinburgh can also be explored for the successful February candidate.
Internship One: February – April
Internship Two: mid June – mid October
Responsibilities may include:
- Data input & management
- Contacting volunteer applicants for the 2013 festival team and arranging interviews
- Research projects as required
- Booking accommodation and liaising with crew
- Producing festival documentation
- Contacting visiting companies
- Assisting the Theatre Manager in the day to day running of the Theatre and rehearsal spaces
- Assisting the General Manager to prepare for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The position is varied and heavily dependent on what we have going on at the theatre at any given time. These responsibilities are an outline only - we are open to expressions of particular interest from candidates and where possible will try and accommodate experience in these areas.
The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic lover of comedy and theatre with excellent communication skills. They will often be tasked with solo projects, so the ability to work independently and with initiative is a must. A good grasp of numeracy, knowledge of Microsoft Office, and the ability to stay focussed in a fast-paced environment are all greatly beneficial.
Please note, these are unpaid voluntary positions and unfortunately we are currently unable to contribute to travel expenses. If you join the Edinburgh team we provide subsistence towards your living expenses and accommodation if required. In 2012 subsistence was £600, 2013 will be along these lines.
