Sue was brought up in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, completing an art foundation course at Barnsley College before moving to The University of Sheffield. She now works as a field archaeologist in Yorkshire.

"Painting provides me with a medium to reconcile my interests in art and archaeology. Derek – the cartoon man in my work - usually sports historical or prehistoric costume and I try, through him, to express some of the theories, issues and challenges in contemporary archaeology. I also hope that he makes my work fun and light-hearted and makes people smile. I like to work with colour and create bold images with contrast and strong tones, or to create calm and neutral work. Derek also helps me to explore the space inside a painting and add an extra dimension to the work. "
