Neil Brand: The Silent Pianist Speaks
Neil Brand
Saturday 22 December 6pm & Sunday 23 December 6.30pm
Neil Brand, writer, composer for BBC’s ‘Paul Merton’s Silent Clowns’ and the ‘doyen of silent film pianists’ (Radio 4) lifts the curtain on his unique profession and accompanies rare, comic and stunning clips from the wealth of silent cinema. As well as taking a sidelong glance at his own globe-trotting 25-year career he investigates how music works with film by inviting the audience to score a love scene and culminates by accompanying a clip ‘sight unseen’ whilst simultaneously describing his reactions to it. The result is a hilarious, sharp and ultimately moving show about cinema and music which pays tribute to the musicians of the silent era through the observations of one of today’s finest exponents.
