Overview

“You’re not black, ok? People see that.”

2016. Oxford University. A statue of Cecil Rhodes.

Jess is a student of one of the most prestigious universities in the world. She is leading a campaign to get a statue of Cecil Rhodes removed from campus. She is also mixed race. So, realistically, does she even have a right to protest?

A look at what happens when race and elite universities collide, Essentially Black is the funny and unflinching debut play by Naomi Denny.

“My ancestors could have been enslaved by people like that man.”
