This year marks Pleasance’s first year of Bridges Festival, a mentoring and creative support programme for new writing. The programme means that Pleasance can meaningfully develop the work of four of the best writers from Pleasance Scratch Nights.

FOUR LOSERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD (AND BETTY)

Welcome to the presbyterian Church of Bois d’Arc Missouri, where a rag-tag group of high schoolers complete their community service for minor misdemeanours. As with most teenagers in a small town with nothing to do but kick the can (literally), it becomes clear that no one is as they first appear. And in this town with more suspicions and hierarchies than you can shake a snake at, an oddball family might be the best support you’ve got.

Sophie is a writer, director and comedian whose work is dark, satirical and character-driven. She is proud to have been described as a ‘woke luvvie’ by the Daily Mail.

Her first play, Second Temple, was described as ‘really f***ing funny' (Varsity) and ‘immensely watchable’ (Reviews Hub). After winning the Harry Porter Prize for Comedy, it sold out Riverside Studios in a production directed by Mimi Pattinson. Sophie has also worked with Fifth Word Theatre, with whom she wrote a play featured in the Nottingham Playhouse Future of Playwriting showcase (directed by Diane Page).

Sophie’s screenwriting has won her a place on the WFTV Kay Mellow Screenwriting Lab, where she was mentored by Lisa Holdsworth (Dreamers, Robin Hood) and Carol Harding (Black Ops, The Confessions of Frannie Langton). Her comedy pilot made the top 10% of BBC Writers Room Submissions. Sophie is also active on the stand-up circuit; she is an alum of the Soho Theatre+ Lab and was recently shortlisted for the BBC New Comedy Awards.
