In this queer, lip-sync cabaret retelling, Giselle is a hopeless romantic, raised on a diet of Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore 1990's rom-coms, who comes to realise that the real world of queer sex, hook-ups and heartbreak is a far cry from Hollywood’s happily-ever-after.
What follows is a journey through shame, assimilation, anger, acceptance and - finally – liberation and joy. All performed to a soundtrack of queer icons ranging from Judy to SOPHIE.
A mixture of live performance art meets warehouse cabaret meets pop concert extravaganza. It’s Giselle like you’ve never seen it before.
From the minds of Pleasance Associate Artist and former Roundhouse Resident Artist, Jack Sears (@jackqueers, Parris is Dreaming, The Bower, Saintmaking), and Royal Ballet Soloist, Hannah Grennell (@hannahjayneg, Woolf Works, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty), comes an evening of cabaret excellence, theatrical divinity, staggering choreography and jaw-dropping lip-syncs, created in collaboration with dancers from The Royal Ballet.
Joining Jack Sears and the Dance Troupe will be Queer Icons Kit Green (@kit_green), Jonny Woo (@jonnywoouk) and Lavinia Co-op (@laviniacoop) as guest star performers; alternating appearances across the three week run.
GISELLE: LATE will be a queer takeover of the Pleasance Theatre on Saturday 20th April featuring an array of the most exciting emerging drag performers, cabaret stars, go-go dancers, opera singers and more who will be stationed throughout the building after that evening’s main show. And if that’s not enough, an array of iconic DJs will turn the Pleasance Main House into Club Giselle for a night of dancing, debauchery and disco until late! Further details to be announced.
