Slime and Pies have selected three playwrights out of 220 applicants to take part in the Saplings programme, to develop a new play through a supported dramaturgical process.
This showcase is a chance for the public to get a taste of what they’ve been working on; three unique and inspiring new plays from some of London’s most exciting new names in playwriting.
The Saplings Playwrights are:
Harjan Singh Boparai
Harjan is a storyteller interested in unravelling the wounds of community through deeply complex Global Majority characters. His work centres South Asian narratives in the diasporic lens through political resistance and migration. His work has been showcased with the National Theatre School of Canada and The Gate, and he continues to challenge what form, structure, and narrative can mean.
Ariana Xeno
Arian is a Writer/Director from East London. After her debut play Stomach she was described as 'a playwright and director to keep an eye on'. She trained at The BRIT School, and was a part of the Old Vic Theatre Makers and Royal Court Writers' group. She is currently on the JMK Shortlist for 2026.
Louis Catliff
Louis is a writer-director based in North London. His work explores the extremes of human behaviour with a light touch. He is a graduate of the Menagerie Young Writers' Workshop and HighTide Writers Group. His work has been staged at the Soho theatre, Pleasance Islington and the New Wolsey.
The Plays:
TEETH by Ariana Xeno
Bow, East London, 1888. Two girls in the attic of a matchstick factory. Machinery rattles on. Downstairs - chatter, coughing phosphorus dust. Unease grows, as a whisper of revolution stirs. What will it cost to break free? Fast paced dialogue ripples through this funny and soulful play.
Directed by Hana Pascal Keegan. Cast: Hannah van der Westhuysen, Laura Brady and Phoebe Campbell.
A KIND OF LOVE by Harjan Singh Boparai
“You start to think maybe your body is truth, your heart a lie, And your mind a plague.”
Thunder strikes. A rotting flat in Hounslow holds what one woman could not, while three couples trace the roots of their infatuation and deep devotion in a world weaving in and out of memory. A Kind of Love asks what it costs to finally look back.
Directed by Mojola Akinyemi. Cast: Payal Mistry, Ikky Kabir, Safeena Ladha, David Ijiti and Aarushi Ganju.
JACKIE O’HOOLIHAN CHOPS DOWN A CHERRY TREE by Louis Catliff
A raucous revenge thriller meets coming-of-age-tale following one woman as she plots a swift and terrible retribution against her husband's killer - that motherfucking cherry tree. A fast-paced, darkly comic tale of rage, grief and creeping gentrification along one of the most intriguing roads in London.
Directed by Alexander Eliot. Cast: Carol Harvey
The Saplings Showcase is creatively captioned and the event is accessible to the d/Deaf community and caption users.
Slime and Pies are Pleasance Associate Artists, and were hailed as 'one of the most exciting companies in the off-west end circuit'. Their work specialises in developing new writing and they are pioneers in creative captioning.
