"Makhid Aalbo" is a sharp, poignant, and hilarious solo performance by Palestinian artist Hanna Shammas. Adapted specifically for international audiences and the diaspora, the show blends masterful storytelling with biting social and political satire.
The narrative centers on Hanna’s life in the city of Haifa, navigating the complex identity of Palestinians living within the 1948 borders. The journey begins with a personal medical discovery: a "hole in his heart." This physical ailment becomes a metaphor for an existential quest: What caused this hole? Is it the friction of living in a complicated political reality? Is it the emotional weight of caring for his mother, who battles Parkinson’s? Or the void left by his sister’s migration to Scotland?
Through the lens of seven influential female figures in his life—ranging from his mother and partner to his therapist and financial advisor—Hanna dissects daily life, family dynamics, and the absurdity of authority.
Why this show?
This performance offers a rare, humanized glimpse into the contemporary
Palestinian experience, moving away from stereotypes and direct
political rhetoric toward a deeply personal, critical, and artistic
expression. It is a journey that connects the local with the global,
proving that the most specific stories are often the most universal.
Please
note the show is in Arabic only.
Part of PalArt Festival 2026,
PalArt Collective’s multidisciplinary celebration of Palestinian arts
and culture.
