Pleasance Theatre's award-winning young company
Launching new Young Pleasance London in autumn 2018
Young Pleasance London
Young Pleasance London is the new young company for actors aged 16 - 25 at the Pleasance Theatre, Islington, launching in September 2018.
After 22 years of creating exciting, devised, physical theatre for the Edinburgh Fringe, the reputation of the Pleasance's youth theatre is established as a "launchpad for new talent and ideas" (Theatre Weekly).
This year we are proud to launch a new group, Young Pleasance London, for ages 16-25. Our mission is to create a diverse, inclusive, innovative and socially responsible youth theatre focusing on new writing. This dynamic company will exist to develop the voices of young artists.
We hosted a taster weekend of physical theatre, improvisation and devising over Easter 2018, and regular weekly sessions will begin in September. To find out more, contact email@example.com
Young Pleasance London: Playwriting Competition
We are not only looking for young actors to join the company, new writing will also be at the heart of Young Pleasance London.
We are looking for inspiring monologues from aspiring playwrights to enter our new playwriting competition. From the submissions, we will select a shortlist of approximately 20 monologues that will be performed by the Young Pleasance London company at the Pleasance Theatre, Islington, in December 2018 as their inaugural production. After this performance, 1 monologue will then be selected as the foundation of a new play to be devised, developed and performed by the same company in 2019. The writer of this winning play will be invited to join the company as resident playwright - from research and development workshops, through to rehearsals, and finally to the production itself in spring 2019.
There is no theme for these monologues, we want you to have complete freedom in how and what you write. We’re interested in hearing new voices telling us new stories about what matters to you, no matter what your background, no matter where you’re from - we are looking for writers the length and the breadth of the UK. There are only a few parameters that need to be considered.
Your monologue must be:
• About something you’re passionate about
• 2 – 3 minutes in length
• Written for a character aged 16 – 25
• Based in the present i.e. today, 2018
• Set where you live i.e. London, Edinburgh etc.
• Your own original work
To submit a monologue you must be:
• Aged 16 – 25
The deadline to submit your monologue is 12-midday, 31 July 2018
You can apply for the Young Pleasance London Playwriting Competition by completing the application form here or via the link at the bottom of the page and submit it along with the script of your monologue (as a Word or PDF file) by the deadline to: firstname.lastname@example.org
